Well, you can use the 8-3 option ("DOS mode") to name all files as DOS names.
Another option is to use the user-defined build structure to force all types
to be 3-characters long:
-N "%h%p/%n%q.%st"
.. but this won't work until the next beta release, as the "%st" option is
currently bogus.
