thanks to WR & XR for suggestions, but couldn't make ANSICON work (-i option is
INSTALL permanent) I tried all the options that looked like they might work.

On the bright side, I've gotten several of the desired mirrors to complete I'm
hopeful updates will be much faster and I won't want/need to watch the updates
via the command line.
