If it's really what you want: 
  You can still get just the PDF files

Download the site with the safer settings:
-* +www.example.com/*.htm* +www.example.com/*.php* 
+www.example.com/*.asp* +*.pdf

Then manually within the OS file-system 
  move *.pdf from the download directory to another
  discard original download directory if desired
