The default is down only, unless changed or overridden by filters.

This means starting at site/a/b it will follow full links down to site/a/b/c
but will not follow full links up to site/a/ or site/a/x

Relative links in the form ../x are followed in down mode.
../x on page site/a/b means site/a/b/../x which is site/a/x
