The 500 is the average read rate. The progress is the current read rate.
If the files are small, the turn around time will dominate. If it takes 2
seconds to receive the file, then you should see a current rate of 1000. The
transfer rate only affect large files. For small files (<65kb) the entire file
is sent since it's smaller then the IP window size.
The connections/sec is the most important from the web site point of view. The
transfer rate becomes important only for large files, large pipes, and many
connections.
