If I remember right, the authors of download managers had 
the same fears while introducing segmented downloading.

You could, just like the dm authors, limit the amount of 
chars for this "search":

It cannot get larger like that:

000.gif to zzz.gif

so this wouldn´t work:

0000.gif to zzzz.gif


This could be a nice starting value and you could increase 
the number of chars if you (Xavier) would allow that in 
future releases.
