What are you using / what do you want to mirror?
- You are starting using the "URL list" option, that 
is, a .txt file with all links inside as standard 
text, and only want to download these links and not 
level 1 links : the -* option should do the trick

- You are starting using the "mirror all files in 
links" option, the -* should work too

- You are starting using the "mirror" option, the -* 
won't work
