It's probably building the directory structure list normally displayed on the
left half.  I have a few seconds delay when I have a CD in the drive as it
spins up on XP

You could have nonfunctioning network/removable drives and that is hanging. 
Try My Computer and My Network Places to see.

Try a reboot.

Also you could try Preferences -> reset to default options
