Doh! OK I get it. The reason I got the error (which was file not found) was
because I launched the "Browse Mirrorred Websites" instead of the "WebHTTrack
Website Copier" menu launcher.  

Everything works. My workaround above (moving firefox to the beginning of the
list of the search path) is a bit inelegant, but I didn't know what the effect
of updating the x-www-browser link would be (since it's supposed to be
"alternative" browser).

Anyway, it's ugly but it works. ;-)
