Subject: How to test for broken links w/o downloading

Seems like a basic question, but I couldn't find it
elsewhere in the forum, so apologies if this is a FAQ.

I have a list of URLs in a text file that I test regularly
to ensure they are still valid. I am not interested in
actually downloading the files the urls point to -- I just
want to see that the URLs in the file haven't gone 404.
I've been using HTTrack for mirroring for a long time, but
this is different, and I can't figure out how to do it!
If I use --testlinks, I still download copies of the pages
the links go to. Is there a way that I can tell HTTrack
to stop downloading once it's clear that the URL goes
somewhere?
Any advice?
