Thanks for the response.  I believe I have tried what you are suggesting: 

1.  Basically a cut/paste from the explorer address bar:
"\\serverlocation\FolderA\SubFolderB\SubFolderC\FolderC\Filname.htm"
2.  <File://same> as above
3.  Copied the weblink to my desktop so it read:
    \\Folder\file.htm
4.  File:\\Folder\File.htm

The folder\file does contain spaces - would that matter?
